Reliability Engineer

This position is an individual contributor role, with no direct reports.  Primary responsibility is the generation and management of support systems for manufacturing equipment and processes:  documentation of technical intellectual property, technical support for ongoing maintenance and production operations, implementation of equipment and process improvement plans.

The Reliability Engineer applies a combination of skills acquired through formal education, professional training, and on-the-job learning to improve the equipment reliability required to support current and future business requirements:

•             Provide technical solutions to remove waste, inefficiency, and ineffectiveness from the maintenance process to lower overall maintenance cost,

•             Provide technical support to maintenance operations to improve the effectiveness of troubleshooting of equipment and process failures,

•             Create effective equipment strategies to enable cost-effective maintenance of equipment capabilities

•             Provide technical ownership of manufacturing equipment and systems

•             Provide leadership to the organization as the ‘ Voice of the Equipment’ in matters of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS), standard operating procedures, production capacity, capital asset management, procurement strategies, and product quality.

 

Identify the essential accountabilities of the role (6-10) and their purpose, and how the jobholder has to satisfy these. Considering the ‘ people’, ‘ process’, and ‘ technical’ aspects of the role may assist in identifying major accountabilities. •             “ Why” – indicate the reason the action is performed, and clarify what the goal is, how it will satisfy a need, who has the need and what it is.

In addition:
  • Closely relate activities should be grouped together as one major accountability
  • Major accountabilities should be listed in order of importance
  • Avoid gender or age based language
  • Avoid understanding or overstating responsibilities
  • Generation and management of technical documentation for assigned equipment by creating and maintaining equipment machine specifications to support both maintenance and production operations.
  • Preparation of equipment strategies by considering asset integrity requirements, Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), etc. to define equipment upgrades needed to meet current and future business requirements.
  • Define equipment preventive and predictive maintenance plans by using FMEA approaches to enable achievement of equipment reliability requirements in a cost-effective manner.
  • Provide technical support to maintenance and production operations by participating in troubleshooting and structured problem-solving events to reduce equipment downtime.
  • Generate and manage engineering reports for assigned equipment by using a tag-based data historian and manufacturing data to enable early detection of shifts in equipment performance and to avoid downtime events when feasible.
  • Provide leadership to the larger organization by serving as the “ Voice of the Equipment” in decision making and definition of strategies and priorities.

Leadership

•             The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at every level of the organization is critical in both written and oral formats.  Particular emphasis is placed on communication with maintenance crafts.

•             The ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization is a job requirement.

Technical

•             Technical competency requirements will depend on a specific position, but in general:

-Engineering Fundamentals (BS in accredited engineering program should suffice)

-CAD (2D for Electrical, 2D & 3D modeling for mechanical)

-PLC programming (ex. Allen Bradley, Modicon)

-Object-Oriented Programming (Visual Basic, Visual C++, etc.)

-Statistical Process Control (Six Sigma methodology)

-Equipment Troubleshooting Skills (specifics depend on position: mechanical vs. electrical)

•             Willingness to acquire new technical and leadership skills, and share existing knowledge with colleagues.

•             Work with immediate supervisor to identify your individual development and training needs to enhance personal skills, achieve success in your current assignment, prepare for future assignments, etc.

•             Keep current with the latest equipment, processes and procedures as they relate to your position and utilize that information to meet department objectives.

•             Participate in Corporate RCM activities including: auditing, best practice sharing, bench

marking, etc.

•             The Autonomous Production Unit (APU) organizational structure requires reliability engineers to work in a de-centralized environment, with strategy and direction on engineering matters originating with the staff Reliability Engineering Manager, but daily work prioritization driven by the APU management.

•             Day-to-day technical support of manufacturing operations will create priority conflicts with the longer-term reliability engineering objectives

•             Each equipment cost center assigned to the reliability engineer will be assessed annually for reliability performance, with subsequent-year improvement objectives defined by the engineer’ s supervisor.

•             Accountabilities will include performance measures such as:

•             Equipment down time

•             Number and adequacy of technical document audits completed

•             Quality of preventive maintenance plan

•             Quality of engineering reporting

•             Quality of input and preparation for equipment outages
